Little Hands, Big Hearts focuses on involving our children in community service and helping others. Listed below is an outline of our planned activities for this year. We will post more details on the MOMs Facebook group and via email.
September: Donations for Brigid’s Path, September 28th, 7:30 @ Fall Mixer
Brigid’s Path provides inpatient care for newborns suffering from prenatal drug exposure, in a home like setting. Utilizing the latest therapeutic techniques combined with a pharmacological approach to provide compassionate recovery.
Speaker will attend the Fall Mixer, MOM’s members are asked to bring a donation to the mixer, and an extra raffle ticket for one of the fabulous prizes.
October: Donations and Assembling Blessing Bags, October 5th, 3:30 @ St. Paul’s
LHBH will gather after school to assemble blessing bags for families or individuals in need of a little something nutritious. Bags will contain a vitamin drink, some protein items, healthcare products, and even a little something sweet! If you cannot attend, we will gladly drop off an assembled bag or 2 after the event for you to keep in your glove compartment for when needed.
November: Veterans Cards and Candy, November 10th, 12:15 @ Wright Library
LHBH will meet on a half day after school at the Wright Library on Friday, 11/10 to make “We Appreciate You” cards for Veterans and “Happy Holiday” cards to Active Duty personnel overseas. Please bring your extra Halloween candy for our Veterans! These bags will be delivered to the Dayton Veterans Administration. Cards to the troops will be mailed with enough time to arrive before the holidays.
December: PJs and Books, Collection starting December 1st @ Wright Library; Wrap, Wine, and Walk for Moms, December 19th, 7:30 @
LHBH and the Wright Library will be hosting a storytime before bed! Come dressed in pajamas and ready to listen to some good stories! We ask that you bring a pair of jammies and/or a new or gently used book to add to the donation bin! If interested in another good night, please join us to wrap the books before passing onto those in need.
January: Kettering Backpack Program, January 11th, 3:30 @ Kettering Church
LHBH will meet at the Christ Methodist Church for the Kettering Backpack Program. MOMs and kids are invited to meet at the KBP and help fight student hunger. Our team will assist with packing food and collecting plastic bags needed to transport food. More information on the organization can be found at: http://ketteringbackpack.org/
February: “Give a Heart Attack,” February 1st, 3:30 @ St. Paul’s & February 3rd 10:30 @ Brookdale
Feeling like giving the local retirement community a “heart attack?” 😉 LHBH will be meeting after school on the 1st to decorate cut out hearts, as well as make fleece heart lap blankets. We will then meet on the 3rd at Brookdale to “attack” the hallways with hearts and love and leave some warm blankets for them to enjoy.
March: Weekend Family Night Collection for Secret Smiles, March 16th-18th @ a local business (TBD)
LHBH will be meeting with their families on nights through the weekend of the 16th through the 18th. LHBH will be collecting money donations for the Secret Smiles Foundations during these days. Secret Smiles Foundation mission is to help families overcome hardships by providing beds and bedding for children. For more information about this charity check out their website: http://www.secretsmilesdayton.org Moms of Oakwood will match the donations collected! (up to $500)
April: Plastic Free Photo Challenge for the whole month of April; Family Pick up Trash at the Streams, April 22nd
Earth day is April 22 but we will be honoring the environment all month as well challenge MOM’s of Oakwood to seriously decrease the plastic in the homes, children lunch boxes and to pick up rubbish in our local parks. On April 22 each committee member (Emily,Renee,Sarah) will be at a different location in our surrounding area (example Houk Stream Park) holding a family friendly rubbish pick up. More fun details to come.
May: Pocket Park Planting, May 11th, 12:15 @ Pocket Park at the Corner of Schenck Ave. and Oakwood Ave.
LHBH will be teaming up with Mary Montgomery and her daughters who have been hard at work to turn a green space on the corner into a pocket park. The park is kid lead and inspired by her daughter’s drawings. In this event we hope to help and leave a MOM’s of Oakwood legacy piece in the park. More details to come….
June: Farmer’s Market, June 16th, 9:00
LHBH will be selling fresh cut flowers and fresh granola. All proceeds will be donated to a local charity (TBD).
